Pumps, fans, compressors, conveyors and production machines all run on electric motors. A motor control panel (MCC) starts, stops and protects those motors from one place. Adding variable frequency drives (VFDs) lets you control their speed and save energy. Here is how both work.
What is a motor control panel?
As our ebook explains, an electric motor control panel uses a combination of drives, relays, switches and transformers to distribute power to the electric motors in an industrial facility. These panels can be used in both low- and medium-voltage applications.
Each motor gets its own feeder with protection, a starter and control. Grouping them in one MCC makes operation, maintenance and fault-finding much easier.

Typical components of an MCC
- MPCB or MCCB for short-circuit and overload protection
- Magnetic contactors to switch the motor
- Thermal overload relays to protect against overheating
- Timers for star-delta and sequencing
- push buttons, selector switches, indicator lamps and ammeters
- PLC or relay logic for interlocking and automation
Choosing a starting method
| Method | Best for | Starting current |
|---|---|---|
| Direct-on-line (DOL) | Small motors | 6–8 × rated current |
| Star-delta | Medium motors with light starting load | About 1/3 of DOL |
| Soft starter | Pumps, fans, conveyors | Smooth, adjustable |
| VFD | Variable speed and energy saving | Very low, fully controlled |
What is a VFD panel?
A frequency inverter (VFD) changes the frequency and voltage supplied to a motor so its speed can be controlled precisely. A VFD panel houses the drive with its input protection, cooling fans, line reactor or filter and control.

Why VFDs save energy
For pumps and fans, the power drawn falls very sharply as speed falls. Running a fan at 80% speed instead of throttling it with a damper uses roughly half the power. That is why VFDs pay for themselves quickly on cooling towers, AHUs, water pumps and compressors.
VFDs also give smooth starting, less mechanical wear and precise process control.
Good practice for MCC and VFD panels
- Size each feeder for the motor’s full-load current and starting method.
- Allow space and ventilation for VFD heat.
- Fit line reactors or harmonic filters where several VFDs are used, and use detuned capacitors in the PFI plant.
- Label every feeder clearly to match the drawings.
- Follow BNBC and IEC standards.
Frequently asked questions
Can one VFD run several motors?
It is possible in some cases, but each motor then needs its own overload protection. Usually one VFD per motor is the better choice.
Do you supply drives from known brands?
Yes. We supply drives and components from ABB, Schneider Electric, Siemens, Mitsubishi and Fuji Electric.
