MPCB / Manual Motor Starter in Bangladesh

A motor protection circuit breaker (MPCB), also called a manual motor starter (MMS), protects a motor against short circuit, overload and phase loss in one compact device. Its overload setting is adjusted to the motor’s full-load current, and it can switch the motor on and off directly.

What is the difference between an MPCB and an MCB?

An MCB protects cables, with fixed settings. An MPCB is designed for motors: its overload setting is adjustable to the motor current and it rides through the starting current without tripping.

Do I still need an overload relay with an MPCB?

No. The MPCB already includes thermal overload protection. A separate overload relay is used when protection is provided by fuses or an MCCB with a contactor.
