Vacuum Circuit Breaker [VCB]

A vacuum circuit breaker (VCB) switches and protects high-voltage circuits, normally at 11 kV or 33 kV. The arc is broken inside a sealed vacuum bottle, so the breaker needs very little maintenance and has a long life.

How to choose

• Voltage class: 11 kV or 33 kV to match the utility supply.
• Rated current: commonly 630 A or 1250 A.
• Short-circuit rating: at least the fault level of the incoming line.
• Mounting: fixed or withdrawable.
• Protection: an IDMT or numerical relay coordinated with the utility and your LT panel.

Why is a VCB preferred over an oil circuit breaker?

A VCB needs no oil, so there is no fire risk from oil and much less maintenance. It also interrupts faults quickly and lasts for many operations.

Can you replace an old breaker in an existing HT panel with a VCB?

Yes. Retrofitting is common. Our engineers inspect the panel, select a suitable VCB and handle testing and commissioning.

Does a VCB need a relay?

Yes. The VCB is the switching device; a protection relay such as an IDMT relay senses the fault and tells it to trip.
