Soft Starter

A soft starter brings an AC motor up to speed gently. Instead of switching on full voltage at once, it raises the voltage step by step during start-up, so the starting current and the mechanical shock on belts, gearboxes and pipes stay low. Many soft starters also stop the motor smoothly, which prevents water hammer in pump lines.

Soft starter, star-delta or VFD?

A soft starter gives a smoother start than a star-delta starter and costs less than a VFD. Choose a VFD instead when you also need to control the running speed. See our guide to MCC and VFD panels.

Mainly at start-up, by limiting the starting current. For energy saving during running, a VFD is the better choice.

Yes. Lower starting current makes it easier for a generator to start large motors.

Match the motor kW and full-load current, and choose a heavy-duty rating for frequent starts or heavy loads.
